I don’t know whether I conjured the wild woman, or she conjured me. All I know is that as I began to create this body of work, she whispered her name again and again: Anyanwu.

 

It’s no coincidence that the shape-shifting and immortal African healer of Octavia Butler’s prophetic imagination came to guide my creative process at this moment.

As in the Wild Seed universe Anyanwu inhabits, our world is in the throes of a power struggle between those who seek dominion and those who seed liberation.

With this body of work, I honor Anyanwu’s resistance to greed, control, and violence. And I celebrate the creativity, wisdom, and resilience  of every woman who answers the call of her true wild self.
